Challenge & Innovative Solution

Montagu Wine & Spirits, under winemaker Henk Wentzel, experienced high power usage spikes during the "Pressing Season" (Jan-Apr) due to harvest processing, leading to nearly 4 times the normal electrical consumption.

Analyzing Eskom's metering data showed that a solar system sized for peak months only would be cost-prohibitive.

Implementation of a balanced solar system to support the farm during low consumption months. Utilizes "Banking" to store excess energy for high-demand periods.

Efficient Energy Management: The solar system provides sufficient power during 8 months of normal consumption, with excess energy banked for the Pressing Season, ensuring operations remain unaffected during peak times.

Cost-Effective & Sustainable: The farm operates "off-grid" for the majority of the year, significantly reducing reliance on external power sources and minimizing operational costs through the use of banked power during the Pressing Season.

Reliable Backup Solution: Battery backups and a generator ensure essential loads are maintained during load shedding, particularly in the critical Pressing Season, enhancing operational resilience.
